Does Acne Get Worse When You’re Stressed at Work?

If you've ever noticed your skin breaking out before a big presentation, during finals week, or while dealing with a difficult work environment, you're not imagining things.

As an acne specialist, I regularly see clients whose skin worsens during periods of high stress at work. While stress is rarely the only factor involved in acne, it can absolutely contribute to more oil production, increased inflammation, and stubborn breakouts that are harder to clear.

Can Work Stress Cause Acne?

In my professional opinion, yes.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that “stress doesn't cause acne.” While acne is a complex condition influenced by genetics, hormones, skincare products, and lifestyle habits, stress can play a significant role in making acne worse.

When you're stressed, your body produces more cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels can increase oil production in the skin. More oil can create an environment where breakouts thrive, especially in individuals who are already acne-prone.

In my treatment room, the most common signs of stress-related acne include:

     
  • Increased oiliness throughout the day
  •  
  • More cystic or inflamed breakouts
  •  
  • Increased skin picking or touching
  •  
  • Slower healing of existing blemishes

What Stress-Related Acne Looks Like in Real Life

One client stands out in particular.

She had been struggling with workplace challenges and ongoing stress within her department. While we were making progress with her acne treatment plan, her results seemed slower than expected.

Eventually, she transitioned into a different department with a healthier work environment. Shortly after the change, her skin began responding much more quickly. Her breakouts decreased, healing improved, and we were finally able to gain the momentum we had been working toward.

Did changing departments magically cure her acne? No.

But reducing a major source of chronic stress removed one of the obstacles standing in the way of clearer skin.

Temporary Stress vs. Chronic Stress

Not all stress affects the skin the same way.

Temporary Stress

Think:

     
  • Finals week
  •  
  • A major work deadline
  •  
  • A presentation
  •  
  • A short-term project

These situations may trigger a breakout, but the flare-up typically resolves within a couple of weeks once the stressful event passes.

Chronic Stress

Think:

     
  • Burnout
  •  
  • Toxic work environments
  •  
  • Ongoing workplace conflict
  •  
  • Long-term caregiving responsibilities
  •  
  • Constant high-pressure schedules

This type of stress tends to have a much greater impact on acne because there is little opportunity for the body to recover. In my experience, chronic stress can make it difficult to achieve long-term clarity, even when a client is using the right products.

Who Seems Most Affected by Stress-Related Acne?

While anyone can experience stress-induced breakouts, I commonly see it among:

Students

Particularly around finals week, major exams, and college application season.

Teachers

Many teachers experience increased stress and breakouts during the beginning and end of the school year when workloads and responsibilities increase.

Healthcare Workers

Hospital workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals often deal with long shifts, disrupted sleep schedules, and high-pressure environments that can contribute to acne flare-ups.

The Biggest Mistake People Make During Stress Breakouts

The biggest mistake I see is panic.

Acne starts getting worse, and suddenly people decide they need:

     
  • A new cleanser
  •  
  • A new serum
  •  
  • A stronger exfoliant
  •  
  • A viral skincare product they saw on social media

Unfortunately, this often makes the situation worse.

When stress-related acne appears, many people become overly aggressive with their skincare routine. They start over-exfoliating, introducing multiple new products, or constantly changing what they're using.

Instead of calming the skin down, they create even more irritation.

How Do You Know Stress Is Improving?

When clients begin managing stress more effectively, I often notice two changes first:

     
  • Existing breakouts heal faster
  •  
  • Fewer new cystic lesions appear

These improvements frequently occur before clients even notice major visual changes in their skin.

Stress Isn't Always the Culprit

It's important to remember that not every breakout is caused by stress.

I've worked with clients who believed stress was the reason their acne wasn't improving, only to discover that the real issue was comedogenic makeup products clogging their pores.

Stress can be a contributing factor, but it's important to evaluate the full picture, including skincare products, cosmetics, hormones, medications, and lifestyle habits.

What I Tell My Clients

If work stress is affecting your skin, my advice is simple:

Stop focusing on buying more products and start focusing on recovery.

Prioritize quality sleep. Be mindful of energy drinks and supplements that may contain acne-triggering ingredients. Stay consistent with your skincare routine instead of constantly changing products.

Most importantly, find ways to reduce stress when you're not at work.

That might look like:

     
  • Taking daily walks
  •  
  • Practicing yoga
  •  
  • Starting a new hobby
  •  
  • Scheduling self-care activities
  •  
  • Using guided meditation apps such as Calm
  •  
  • Creating better boundaries between work and personal life

The goal isn't to eliminate stress completely. That's unrealistic.

The goal is to give your mind and body opportunities to recover.

Because sometimes the best thing you can do for your skin isn't another serum.

It's learning how to leave work at work.
